Rafiki

Alamo Drafhouse Cinema Texas Premiere

Tickets:$12
Tickets on sale soon.

Film Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7M_-ucSaFpU

Bursting with the colorful street style & music of Nairobi’s vibrant youth culture, "Rafiki" is a tender love story between two young women in a country that still criminalizes homosexuality. Kena and Ziki have long been told that “good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives” - but they yearn for something more. Despite the political rivalry between their families, the girls encourage each other to pursue their dreams in a conservative society. When love blossoms between them, Kena and Ziki must choose between happiness and safety.

Initially banned in Kenya for its positive portrayal of queer romance, "Rafiki" won a landmark supreme court case chipping away at Kenyan anti-LGBT legislation. Featuring remarkable performances by newcomers Samantha Mugatsia and Sheila Munyiva, "Rafiki" is a hip tale of first love “reminiscent of the early work of Spike Lee” (Screen Daily) that’s “impossible not to celebrate” (Variety)

Dir. Wanuri Kahiu, 2018, Kenya/South Africa/Germany/Netherlands/France/Norway and Lebanon (In English & Swahili w/Eng subtitles), 83 min, DCP

Burtday: Heat (1986) in 35mm!

THE SECOND ANNUAL BURTDAY, ONE INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE.

Screening in 35mm courtesy of the American Genre Film Archive.

Opening with Burt Reynolds getting beat up by someone half his size, HEAT gets into the muck of Las Vegas sleaze with a Christmas backdrop. Mex, an ex-mercenary now acting as a “chaperone” in Vegas, yields to the plea of his friend Holly after she is brutally attacked by a very wealthy and very sick man-child named DeMarco. She wants his balls in her hands, and she needs Mex’s help to get them there. Simultaneously, Mex’s services are sought out by Cyrus, a guileless millionaire who wants to learn to be tough. Mex puts his skills to work to help both, all with his eyes on the goal of making enough money to move to Venice. HEAT shows the Reynolds easy charm (even when he looks rather tired and over it) and includes one of the most wildly unrealistic bad guy deaths because that’s what movies are for.

Weird Wednesday: Drop Dead Fred

AN IMAGINARY FRIEND TORMENTS PHOEBE CATES!
File this one under "Who in the world was this movie made for?!" Much beloved by many people who were children in the early 90s, this fantasy comedy is about a young woman (Phoebe Cates of GREMLINS fame) whose mental health is taking a nose dive after her husband runs off with a young blonde. Kids love marital problems! Throw in some blue language and sexual situations, and it's a wonder any parent let their child view this odd BEETLEJUICE riff. Rik Mayall ("The Young Ones") is the titular DROP DEAD FRED. With a face as elastic as Jim Carrey and a unique screamy delivery he bulldozes through every scene, chewing it up and spitting it out. Cates gives an empathetic performance as the victim of an overbearing mother, a philandering husband, and the world's most obnoxious imaginary friend. Gross out hijinks ensue and some BIG life lessons are learned. Carrie Fisher co-stars as the supportive non-imaginary best friend!

But it’ll take a cross-country death-trip to really bring them together. Combining the darkness of CHILD’S PLAY with savage humor, BRIDE OF CHUCKY is a joyful combination of outstanding gore, evil gags, and John Ritter as a crooked cop. But this movie’s secret weapon is Tilly, whose confident, take-no-shit performance made her an icon of 1990s horror.

Video Vortex: Blood Tracks

PREPARE TO SHRED. AND DIE!!

Never has a group of people been so ill-prepared to deal with cannibal mutants during a snowstorm. Easy Action, the world’s hottest metal band, is shooting a video in the Swiss Alps. But oh no! The band’s hot shredz cause an avalanche that disturbs a family of deformed killers who lust for revenge! BLOOD TRACKS proves that THE HILLS HAVE EYES would have been even more fun if it was a heavy metal horror movie featuring guyliner, cocaine, decapitations, and sauna sex. The tagline on the original VHS boasted: “From the makers of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET!” Of course, this was completely made up. Because nothing goes better with false metal than false advertising.

Ken Russell's 'Crimes of Passion:' Director's Cut in 35mm

An ultra-rare 35mm screening of Ken Russell's director's cut!

Ken Russell’s second feature made in the U.S. (following the also incredible ALTERED STATES) and second collaboration with Rick Wakeman (following LISZTOMANIA) is among his best. Earnest, faithful husband Bobby Grady (John Laughlin) is put to the test when he encounters the world of China Blue (the great Kathleen Turner), a prostitute fulfilling the fantasies of perverts-galore. Her neon-splashed nightlife is a stark contrast to his bland homelife, brightened only by a TV set. He’s on her trail, hired by employees of her daytime self, Joanna Crane, successful fashion designer. Also spoiling her fun is a maniac preacher (Anthony Perkins, fantastic), slimy with sweat and holder of the world’s most threatening dildo. If she’s not turning tricks for the money, what’s she doing it for?

Wakeman’s score is the perfect companion to the wild, over the top narrative, including a music video interlude for “It’s a Lovely Life” with vocalist Maggie Bell scream-singing along. Sum total music + images is the best of what movies can do!

Print courtesy of the Academy Film Archive.

From scientists to celestial beings, journalists to different kinds of scientists, Mr. Goldblum’s name in the credits of a movie imprint a badge of honor more honest than a thousand film festival laurels. Come spend the day marveling at four examples of a master at work (kept secret until the picture hits the screen), and bask in his one-of-a-kind je ne sais quoi in the company of fellow devotees, jolted along with surprises, special theme menus, and more!

Making Montgomery Clift

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Texas Premiere

Tickets: $12

Film Trailer: https://vimeo.com/289897587

Co-Presented by: Austin Film Society

Austin Film Society will be screening, "The Heiress" starring Montgomery Clift, Olivia deHavilland and Ralph Richardson on Thursday, January 10 and Saturday, January 12 at AFS Cinema.
More info: https://www.austinfilm.org/screening/the-heiress/

Classic film star and queer icon Montgomery Clift's legacy has long been a story of tragedy and self-destruction. But when his nephew dives into the family archives, a much more complicated picture emerges.

Montgomery Clift was one of the most influential actors in the history of cinema, bucking traditions on and off screen, but countless biographies have reduced him to labels like “tragically self-destructive” and “tormented.”

Now, nephew Robert Clift and Hillary Demmon rigorously examine the flawed narratives that have come to define Monty’s legacy. Drawing on interviews with family and loved ones and a rich collection of unreleased archival materials from Monty and his brother, Brooks Clift, this fresh portrait of the actor’s passions, contributions and commitment to living and working in his own way gives one of Hollywood’s under-appreciated legends his due.

Dir. Robert Anderson Clift & Hillary Demmon, 2018, USA, 88 min, DCP

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema special screening.

There are cynical teen girls, and then there is Enid, so totally over it that she’s already clocked over a million eye rolls in her short life span. Her long standing friendship with Rebecca involves tearing a path of fun-making through all varieties of humans, their spirits mean and soaring. When her blind date prank goes to new cruel territory, Enid follows her pity to friendship with the sucker, Seymour. Turns out all the dorky things he is into and his general malevolence are just where she wants to be. Funny and heartfelt, GHOST WORLD became a classic almost immediately, with characters we adore, and moments easy to relate to. Video Vortex: Ritual of Death

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema special screening.

“If you only see one Brazilian horror movie in your lifetime, make sure it’s RITUAL OF DEATH. Brad and his friends are rehearsing for a play. But is the theater haunted, or is Brad really transforming into a medieval executioner with the sole purpose of disemboweling all humans?! Heavily influenced by BLOOD FEAST, EVIL DEAD, and the work of Lucio Fulci, RITUAL OF DEATH is your new favorite nightmare zone. Psychedelic pus! Day-glo slime! Ghost cars running over people until their intestines pop out! Sleazy, goopy, and infused with an infectious electricity, this movie feels like it was filmed through a haze of weed, Busch beer, and brain aneurysms. There is also a power ballad theme song called “Beyound Love.”
